Black history month
In the UK, Black History Month runs throughout October. It is a chance for everyone to learn more about, recognise and celebrate the achievements, contribution and successes of people of African and Caribbean heritage, both here in Leeds and beyond.
The month celebrates not only black history, but the arts – artists, actors, writers, TV personalities and culture in the UK and beyond. It’s a chance to learn about black experiences and achievements in history and how to take that understanding forward into every day of the year.
We want Leeds to be the best city for everyone to play, live, grow-up and work in and our city’s diversity is one of the things that make Leeds such a great place to be – did you know that over 200 languages are spoken in our city?
For children and young people:
The My Learning site run by Leeds Museums and Galleries will be focusing on Black History this month with some stories relating to Leeds. Click here to view >>
The Geraldine Connor Foundation are running a project called ‘Represent’ from Tue 27 – Fri 30 October at Leeds Industrial Museum and online with Ignite Yorkshire and Heritage Corner. The project is for young people aged 16 – 24 years old and you get to look at the industrial history collections and the diverse stories they tell. There are 15 places and the deadline to apply is 4 October. Click here to view >>
