What is a School Street?

A School Street is a temporary closure of the road closeby to a school during drop-off and pick-up times. This makes it safer to make active travel choices (to walk or cycle to school) as there is not a build-up of traffic and vehicles.

This contributes to achieving the Vision Zero 2040 strategy and helps to avoid congestion, illegal parking issues and disruption to those living nearby to a school.

There are 15 schools who currently run School Streets (as of March 2024):

What is the impact of School Streets?

We reached out to one school that runs School Streets to find out about the impact they have….

We started ‘School Streets’ a couple of years ago to help with the traffic congestion outside school at the beginning and end of the school day.

We are located at the end of a road, so traffic build up was a major issue, cars would try and park as close to the school as possible causing problems with children coming in and out.

Since the introduction of the scheme the area outside school is now vehicle free. Children and parents don’t have to worry about cars trying to turn around in a small space.

We have seen that more children are coming to school on their bikes and scooters as the approach to school is now safer.
