The Leeds Children’s Mayor Summit 2024
On Tuesday 21st May 2024, the Leeds Children’s Mayor, Mohammed from Ireland Wood Primary School, hosted his Primary Summit at Leeds Civic Hall. The aim of the event was to bring year 5 students from primary schools across Leeds together to learn about the Leeds Children’s Mayor programme and to hear how they could implement the activities that Mohammed and his school, supported by the Voice, Influence and change team, had developed to tackle climate change as part of Mohammed’s manifesto.
What happened at the Leeds Children’s Mayor’s Primary summit?
The event was attended by 15 primary schools from across Leeds with pupils from their year 5 classes. It was opened by Cllr Venner who shared the importance of raising the voice of young people in Leeds. The pupils then heard from Mohammed about his year as Leeds Children’s Mayor including all the activities his school has taken part in to achieve the goals set out in his manifesto.
The Lord Mayor at the time of the event, Al Garthwaite, attended and taught the pupils about the importance of her role and how it’s a great way to highlight the great work that local charities deliver to support the people of Leeds. The pupils were able to take part in a question-and-answer session where they found out lots of interesting facts about the Lord Mayor.

Sustainable travel
The attendees learned about more environmentally friendly ways to travel to and from school.
Manifesto writing
The children learned how to write a winning manifesto based on the Child Friendly Leeds 12 Wish that is most important to them.
Incredible Edible
The team from Incredible Edible ran a workshop which taught them about recycling and how to make compost using food scraps and recyclable materials.
The event was a great success with pupils feeling more confident about entering the Leeds Children’s Mayor elections. They felt better equipped to write a winning manifesto and felt even more confident about ways to live more sustainably. Teachers in attendance said that they had a better understanding of the Leeds Children’s Mayor programme and that they felt more confident to support their year 5 pupils to write a winning manifesto.
