The comic book thing: Our story – the unbound, free digital edition
We’re thrilled to share the launch of Our Story in a free digital format. It is a powerful comic anthology created by young people aged 15–25 with lived experience of the care system in Leeds.
This unique collection brings together art, storytelling, and creativity to amplify voices that are too often unheard. Developed in partnership with the British Library, Leeds Children’s Services, and facilitators Sarah Chapleo and Mollie Ray, Our Story offers an honest, vibrant look at care experiences through the eyes of those who know them best.

The book is split into two parts:
“Our Story”
A collection of original comics exploring identity, resilience, creativity, and hope. Each story is a personal reflection, sometimes serious, sometimes funny, but always real.
Contributors include:
Abi Keis • Amy Culley • Anisa Khan • Timber • Lim Young • Megan Kelly • Sophie Reed • Sadam • Sudaba Akbari • Summer Culley • Summer • Tanomi Dolphin • Zak Sharif
As one artist, Zak, writes:
“I didn’t even know about foster care before it happened to me. I want this book to inform people that there is such a thing.”
“Your Story”
A hands-on section that invites readers to create their own comics. It’s full of warm-up drawing exercises, storytelling prompts, and activities to spark imagination from “the squiggle game” to “draw three things.”
It encourages everyone to make art from their own experiences, however big or small. There’s an artist in everyone!
More than a comic: Voices that matter
This isn’t just a comic book. It is a powerful message from young people who’ve experienced care. It showcases their creativity and the importance of being heard.
The group hopes this project inspires other young people, foster carers, and anyone curious about the care experience.
“…We hope this book makes you happy and gives you clarity on the care experience.”
