A message from a Member of Youth Parliament about Democracy Day

In today’s blog we have a statement from Sam Slater, a member of Youth Parliament, who has recently been involved in planning an event around UKYP democracy day. The event will be hosted at Leeds Civic Hall on 5 November 2014 and aims to improve young peoples participation in and awareness of politics.
Sam Slater, Member of Youth Parliament, said:
“On 5th November 2014 the United Kingdom Youth Parliament for Leeds are going to be hosting an event which aims to empower, educate and engage young people from all around the city. We will be inviting 14-19 year olds from across Leeds to attend the event in the Council Chambers at the Civic Hall.
“Students will be learning about the differences between local and national politics over a two hour training session – with one session in the morning and one in the afternoon. During the event, students will take part in a mock election, hear a speech from Councillor Alice Smart and they will leave with an enhanced understanding and awareness of politics. This event is being entirely planned and led by young people representing Youth Parliament.
“It’s amazing to be involved in the UK Youth Parliament and I’m looking forward to doing more in depth work with young people in Leeds. I’m very intrigued to hear Alice Smart’s speech because I want to find out what it’s like to be Leeds’s youngest Councillor.”
A big thanks to Sam for that statement. If you’d like to find out more about Democracy Day and how you can get involved in youth parliament you can visit: http://www.breezeleeds.org/pg/327/UK_Youth_Parliament_Leeds.
