Lord Mayor’s Lego Crest fundraising challenge given helping hand from schools
School children from across Leeds have added their support earlier this year by adding their support to the exciting fundraising challenge by the Lord Mayor of Leeds which was aimed to create a gigantic city crest made entirely out of Lego bricks.
Having worked with child friendly Leeds for several months, I felt like the Leeds Lego Crest would be a perfect opportunity to engage schools and children of all backgrounds and abilities. Many schools in Leeds were involved in fundraising to help bring the crest to life, and as a special thank you, pupils were invited to Leeds Civic Hall this month to meet the Lord Mayor Councillor Judith Chapman, where they were also given the opportunity to add bricks of Lego to the mosaic. Children from all schools (listed below) provided extremely positive feedback about the opportunity, the Lego and of course the afternoon tea.
The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Judith Chapman said:
“We have received some amazing support from so many schools and pupils in Leeds for our Lego Crest fundraising challenge, and it was only right that I gave them a big thank you in person for all their efforts. There was also the chance for the pupils to see how the crest was progressing and add some of their own bricks to the mosaic which really was great fun.”
The crest, which is displayed on a specially designed 3.5m x 3.5m board, will when finished, be made up of a massive 200,704 bricks including 26 different colours of which only one is violet! All proceeds from the challenge have been given to the Lord Mayor’s chosen charity this year, Specialist Autism Services. The final brick on the Lego Crest had been inserted on the mosaic at the civic hall as part of a World Autism Awareness Day event on 1 April. Child friendly Leeds were very impressed with the huge amount raised from the Lego building days for schools and the ‘just one day’ initiative that took place on the 1st April which was £3669.
