Our Members of Youth Parliament (MYP) reflect on their two year term.

As their time as MYPs comes to an end, we’re hearing from the 3 young people who represented Leeds in the House of Commons…
Meet the new Members of Youth Parliament here:
Amelia

Joining the Youth Council stemmed from my profound passion for politics, driving me to actively contribute to my community. In those early months, I immersed myself in networking, establishing connections with individuals who shared my ideologies and aspirations. Our discussions spanned various topics, eventually pinpointing specific areas of interest, notably addressing poverty, which later evolved into a significant national campaign.
Beyond the Youth Council, additional external opportunities unfolded. I seized the chance to participate in the NHS Youth Forum, broadening my scope of engagement in critical issues affecting youth healthcare. This experience not only enriched my perspective but also allowed me to contribute to vital conversations on a larger scale.
Moreover, my role extended to representing the children of Leeds at both national and regional levels. This responsibility enabled me to be a voice for our community on broader platforms, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility. These diverse experiences collectively shaped my journey, offering insights into various facets of community service and advocacy.

Being a MYP was one of the best experiences I’ve had. It has taught me a lot about democracy, representation and young people. During this time I learned the value of communication, consistency and partnership. I started this journey not too sure on how to do things or even how to speak with decision makers, but I have undertook a journey of self confidence which has empowered me not necessarily to be not afraid but rather not allow my fears to prevent me from doing or saying what I know to be right.
Representing young people in Leeds has awakened my desire to be the voice to those who fear to speak up. I have loved everything about my journey as MYP and I can’t wait to see what God has in stored for me in the future. I couldn’t have wish to take this journey with no one but my girlies: Tian and Amelia and I’ve definitely made sisters for life. And a massive shout out to Rebecca and Emily they have definitely been super supportive and patient with me. Can’t wait for the next adventure.

Tian

My favourite part of the member of youth parliament is the chance and space to meet other young people passionate about the issues you also care about.
The unique network has given me greater understanding of how youth advocacy works on a regional and national level. From attend the monthly health and well-being campaign group in Leeds to debating at the annual conference on priorities for the national campaign.
The experience has opened many more doors (such as becoming steering group representative for Yorkshire and Humber), fuelled my interest in local issue-based politics and amplifying the voice of the youth ☺️
