The Leeds Children’s Rights service who advocate for care experienced children and young people

The Barnados Leeds Children’s Rights Service
Barnardo’s Leeds Children’s Rights Service is a confidential, independent rights and advocacy service for all Leeds Looked After Children and Care Experienced Young People (children who might live with foster carers, in a residential home, have a social worker or otherwise care experienced). This service can support children and young people with a Leeds social worker through advocacy.
What is advocacy?
Advocacy is when someone listens to what you are saying and makes sure your voice is heard. Our workers are called Advocates and they can help you do this. We can support you to ensure that you are informed of your rights and that you are involved in decision making which affects your life. We can give advice and information, help have your say in decisions that affect you, get answers to your questions, help you to sort out problems and assist in making complaints if need be.
How has the service helped others?
Callum was unhappy where he was living so he told his advocate
who helped him to arrange somewhere else.
Jack could never get in touch with his Social worker or IRO, so his advocate contacted them and explained how he felt. He now sees them a lot more.
Amber’s advocate listened to her views and attended her
Review Meeting, instead of her, so she got to say what she wanted, without having to be there.
Nobody took Mohammed’s complaint seriously… until his advocate listened and helped him through the process of making his complaint matter!
Amy wanted more family time and
contact with her brothers & sisters, so her advocate helped to
arrange this.
Kyle knows that his advocate
will always support him with
important decisions about his
life.
