Everyone takes more action to protect the environment from climate change
Children and young people have a greater awareness and understanding of what actions are being taken in Leeds to address the climate emergency and protect the environment. They know how they can get involved and make a difference.
What is Wish 5?
#LeedsByExample
Leeds has been graded ‘A’ for its environmental action and Leeds City Council’s carbon footprint shrank by 63% from the year 2005 to 2023. ‘Leeds by example’ is about celebrating that Leeds is paving the way in taking action against climate change to protect our precious environment. However, it is also about making sure that we continue to set this example and that everyone, including those in Leeds, follow it.
The website is linked in the ‘websites and resources’ section below and is full of ideas and practical suggestions on what we can all do, to play our part.

Wish 5 in the Council
There is work taking place within Leeds City Council, lead by our ‘Wish Leads’, on Wish 5 right now. The short-term priorities are:
- Raise awareness of the Climate Action Route Map (CARM) for schools and settings and monitor how many schools use this.
- Develop a climate awards to recognise and celebrate the best climate action from Leeds children and young people.
- Deliver an event for schools about the role of a Sustainability Lead and how to develop a school Climate Action Plan.
The long-term priorities are:
- Link in with Employment & Skills around green skills and opportunities.
- Set targets for number of schools using the Climate Action Route Map and running Eco/Green teams.
- Share best practice between schools to increase and improve school climate action.
